Can Acne Be Itchy : How To Treat It?

Itchiness is a hallmark symptom of long- and – short-term skin ailments, from eczema. However, this symptom has not been associated with acne. Recent research shows that itchiness is common with acne. You’re certainly not alone if you have experienced this symptom and there are remedies.

A Common Experience

Itchiness frequently accompanies this skin condition while pimples remain the focus with acne. A study conducted among 108 teens receiving acne therapy revealed that a full 50 percent experienced some itchiness related to their skin condition, as reported in January 2008 from the journal”Acta Dermato-Venereologica.”

Another study published in November 2008 at the”Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology” found 70 percent of the 120 study participants being treated for acne reported several related itchiness.

Frequency and Intensity

The studies give some information about its frequency and intensity although itchiness hasn’t been researched to date. In the”Acta Dermato-Venereologica” and”Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology” studies, nearly all participants reported that acne-related itchiness happened only intermittently — in some as rarely as once a month. Just 7% of the”Acta Dermato-Venereologica” research participants reported daily itchiness.

In both studies, with 10 being the strength, itchiness’ high degree was reported to be moderate, roughly 4 to a scale. A score of 4 is approximately equivalent to that of a mosquito bite. The severity of the acne did not appear to affect intensity or the frequency of the itchiness.

Negative Effects

At the”Acta Dermato-Venereologica” and”Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology” studies, 15 percent and 21 percent of study participants reported their itchiness occasionally made it hard to fall asleep. Other impacts included anxiety, agitation, mood changes and difficulty concentrating. Itchiness incites scratching of pimples. This may lead to discoloration and scarring.

Causes

Acne-related itchiness because remains incompletely understood, and more research is necessary. Several theories have been suggested. Some researchers speculate that those who experience itchiness may have a form of some other skin condition called dermatographism.

With this condition touching of the skin causes. Researchers have suggested that the symptom may indicate treatment efficacy — and that treatment contributes to changes in the skin which activate itchiness. Another possibility is that acne itself enables itchiness via mechanisms. It is possible that other devices or these mechanisms act to cause itchiness.

Treatment

The treatment strategy has not yet been determined because the specific cause of itchiness remains unknown. Approximately 20 percent of people in the”Acta Dermato-Venereologica” study reported that draining their face with cold water decreased short-term itchiness. Avoiding aggravating factors — such as perspiration conditions and anxiety — may decrease the frequency of itchiness. Oral antihistamines were reported to work by some study participants at the”Acta Dermato-Venereologica” and”Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology” studies. However, research studies haven’t yet been conducted to find out the efficacy of antihistamines for itchiness. Working with your doctor to make sure your skin doesn’t become dry is significant.
